A powerful voice in Latin jazz, Bill O’Connell always plays concerts of originals and re-imagined standards filled with energy and high spirits.  O’Connell’s clever and sparkling rearrangements, exuberant chordal comping, and knotty solos, all imbued with lots of fun, transcend categorization and combine rhythmic complexities with glittering single note runs in a sort of Bud Powell-meets-Chick-Corea sound.

Bill has been called “nothing short of a national treasure”, “a master of the broadest spectrum of musical styles, a giant of modern jazz, a member of Latin jazz royalty”, and “a colossus of musical dignity and improvisational authority,” according to the jazz critics.  Lauded by Downbeat Magazine as “an inspired hybridizer of modernist jazz and Afrodiasporic idioms as an improviser and composer,” O’Connell has released 18 records as a leader, the GRAMMY-nominated pianist is a Steinway artist and four-time recipient of the coveted “Jazz Writer of the Year” award from SESAC.  JAZZIZ Magazine said this about Bill’s performance: “The skill and chemistry of the players and the many small pleasures in arrangement and execution add up to a high-scoring set.”  Bill’s musical magic will be on magisterial display on August 23 at Piedmont Piano.  He began his career playing piano with conguero and Grammy Hall of Fame member Mongo Santamaria, was the long-time pianist of dynamic flutist and Grammy winner Dave Valentin, worked with Jerry Gonzales and his famed Fort Apache Band, and is a regular collaborator with trumpeter Randy Brecker.

A native of Oakland, bassist, composer, author, and educator Lincoln Goines has distinguished himself as one of the premier bassists of his generation. A mainstay of the New York City jazz, Latin, and studio scenes for over four decades and noted for versatility and fluid style, his resume reads like a who’s who of the pop, jazz and Latin world, including appearances and recordings with Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Gato Barbieri, Carly Simon, Mike Stern, Dave Grusin, Paquito D’Rivera, Michel Camilo, Dave Valentin, Tania Maria, Eliane Elias, Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Bob Mintzer, and Wayne Krantz.

Drummer Jon Krosnick has been a mainstay of the San Francisco Bay Area jazz scene for more than twenty years, performing with his group, Charged Particles, as well as the nine-piece Latin jazz group, The Lunar Octet. He has performed with pianist Chick Corea, bassist John Patitucci, trumpeter Randy Brecker, reed player Paul McCandless, saxophonist Kristen Strom, and many more.
