In a career spanning some four decades, the vivacious Clairdee has performed as an internationally touring artist who’s collaborated with some of America’s most celebrated jazz masters, including Dick Hyman, Bucky Pizzarelli, Houston Person, Cyrus Chestnut, Russell Malone and Ken Peplowski.
Deeply informed by the music’s departed masters, Clairdee puts a personal stamp on whatever she sings, a gift aptly described by the inimitable Nancy Wilson, who declared that “in the tradition of all great vocalists she infuses each song with her own unique style while always remaining true to the song itself.” Equally at home singing various idioms in an array of settings, in addition to leading her own world-class band, Clairdee works with symphony orchestras, big bands, and intimate duos.
Clairdee’s discography as leader includes four highly regarded albums on her Declare Music label. “A Love Letter to Lena,” garnered international press and was acknowledged in three categories in the 2020 Grammy® first round nominations.

“Depth, Elegance, Heart, Integrity. Bad-ass Soul…the meeting point of impeccable musicianship and catharsis.” -Quotes from fans at live shows
The sound of Heart Matter starts with soothing, lush vocals and the entrancing, mythical waves of vibraphone, weaving compositions that are both virtuosic and uplifting. Co-led by vocalist Amy D and vibraphonist Dillon Vado, the band is celebrating both one year of music at Keys Jazz Bistro and the first public appearance with the new name, Heart Matter.
Heart Matter guides listeners into a state of deep and honest feeling, centering the unifying, healing qualities of sound.
Heart Matter’s innovative, original sounds combine the intentionality of chamber music with the grounded yet agile nature of Brazilian rhythm, the spontaneity of jazz improvisation, and soul-stirring lyrics.
The infectiously funky nature of Esperanza Spalding, the lyrical depth of Joni Mitchell, and the catchy/memorable melodies of The Beatles and Paul Simon are some of the influences that this bold and original project nod towards in their compositions and performances.
.
After recent sold out sets at the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest and Healdsburg Jazz Festival, Heart Matter is excited to invite you on this exploration of sound and complex emotion at Keys on Friday November 10th!

Jesse leads our new anniversary series at Keys-The Horns Of San Francisco, featuring the finest horn players and band leaders in the greater Bar Area.
Jesse Levit began his journey with music when he was 5 years old on the violin, then switched to saxophone and piano at the age of 7. Described as having “…a beautifully articulate voice that instrumentally falls somewhere between Chet Baker and Stan Getz” by Jazz Now Magazine, vocalist Sherri Roberts is deeply influenced by and derives inspiration from the Vo-Cool jazz era of the ’50’s. Her musical program at Keys Jazz Bistro promises to bring fresh interpretations to songs recorded and sung by trumpeter Chet Baker, including her original lyrics to Chet’s improvised solos. As remarked upon in JazzTimes,“Roberts’ cleverness is best demonstrated in a nakedly sensuous vocal-bass treatment of “Do It the Hard Way,” with a keenly-crafted vocalese interlude inspired by Chet Baker. Enchanting.”
Sherri has delighted fans in and around the Bay Area for several decades and has toured to major jazz venues, both in the states and abroad. She has five critically acclaimed CD recordings as a leader, which remain available through online retailers and streaming platforms. At Keys she will be backed by the stellar David Udolf Quartet featuring Dave Bendigkeit on trumpet.

This Keys performance is the premiere of Jazz Mafia’s newest project, reimagining the music of three iconic, rule-breaking American artists: Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, and Prince. All three shared an attitude that nobody would dictate how, when, why, or for whom they made their music. The Tammy L Hall Trio Pays Tribute to Shirley Horn at Keys Jazz Bistro October 13-14. Four shows at 7 and 9pm.
Shirley Horn is still the Queen of Slow- ballads. There is no question that Here’s To Life, the award winning recording released in 1992 by Verve, is still one of the best-selling recordings of all time and certainly the most romantic. This one reignited her career and introduced her to a couple of generations of new listeners. I am still in awe of that particular repertoire, composed by and so deftly and beautifully arranged by Johnny Mandel (his crowning glory- imho) and their collaboration. We’re excited to present some very well and not so well known ‘Shirley’ tunes at Keys Bistro in October. I look forward to seeing you there.
Here’s To Life; Here’s To Shirley!

Jazz guitarist Calvin Keys is a legend among soul-jazz fans and known for his lean, muscular single-string solo style, Keys was born in 1942 in Omaha, Nebraska. His first musical influence was his father Otis, a well-known drummer who passed the music bug on to Calvin.
In 1971, he signed with Black Jazz label, released a pair of albums and played in the Ray Charles Orchestra. Keys’ unique phrasing and his ability to balance sophisticated jazz harmonics with tough R&B and soul grooves were showcased nightly in the Charles band.
By 1975, Keys had relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he became — and remains — an avid participant in its jazz community. He worked in live settings and recording sessions with John Handy, Bobby Hutcherson, Eddie Marshall, Bob Braye, Ed Kelly, Eddie Duran, Bruce Forman, Junius Simmons, and Eddie Moore.

“I spent many years living in the Bay Area. During that time, I developed a special affection for the music of the Pacific Jazz Label, an LA-based record company that started in 1952 and carried on through the 60’s as World Pacific Records. West Coast jazz, people called it. And it was a thing. It was characterized often by the lack of a chordal instrument even though there were pianists and guitarists on the label, as well. The music itself was usually not difficult or intricate and the playing was more about sounding cool than blowing minds with awesome virtuosity. It was laid back and felt good. Some of the cats on the roster – Shorty Rogers, Shelly Manne, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Russ Freeman, Hampton Hawes, Bud Shank, Paul Desmond, Jim Hall, Chico Freeman, Jimmy Giuffre, Victor Feldman and Cal Tjader. The music reminds me of taking a drive down Highway 1 on a sunny day, of Golden Gate Park, of the beautiful redwoods of Muir Woods and Big Sur, of concerts by the sea on a Sunday afternoon. Even though the label was in LA, the music was the soundtrack for my time in Oakland and San Francisco.” – Dred Scott
