This five-piece powerhouse crew features conservatory-trained classical and jazz musicians who find a common language in their passion for the music that exists in between genres. The unique instrumentation of cello, viola, violin, trombone, bass, vocals, and percussion serves as the perfect vehicle to explore the edges of the perceived musical universe.
Their sound blends acoustic crossover with influences from funk, folk, jazz, roots, and global music, creating surprising arrangements and carefully crafted originals. Their performances push boundaries and break preconceptions, bringing an energy that is both dynamic and engaging. They seamlessly integrate 80s rock ballads, western chamber music, and hip-hop, making sure no set is complete without a diverse range of musical expressions.
Thriving in collaborative environments, Cosa Nostra Strings was featured at the Kennedy Center in collaboration with GRAMMY-winning composer Mason Bates in 2019. The same year, they traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico to perform with award-winning dancers Lil Buck & Jon Boogz for an audience of 10,000 at Despertares Mexico. Cosa Nostra Strings is a regular at esteemed Bay Area venues like SFJAZZ, where they were named young artists to look out for in 2017. The band has collaborated with artists such as Blackalicious, Lyrics Born, The T Sisters, and Lilan Kane, among many others.
